Dear Pony Clubbers: March 2008
The Washington State Polocrosse Association (WSPA) is once again offering their time, talent and expertise to teach pony clubbers how to play Polocrosse, one of the eight disciplines offered through the United States Pony Club.
This year, WSPA has two fun-filled days planned.
On Sunday, May 25th, a WSPA Teaching Clinic will give pony clubbers the chance to learn ball-handling skills, rules of the game, team interaction, and generally practice playing. Entry fee for the clinic is only $30 per rider, which includes Youth Membership to WSPA, giving kids access to all WSPA practices, tournament, nationals, and more.
Then on Monday, May 26th, teams will have the chance to play with each other during the USPC Teaching Rally, hosted by the Washington State Polocrosse Association and the USPC NW Region. Rally fees are being kept to a minimum to encourage players to enter!
Participants will have instruction from world-class polocrosse players who have represented the United States on international senior and junior American Polocrosse Association (APA) teams, playing in Europe and Australia. Watch them and their winning horses at work while they teach the clinic and umpire the rally.
This will be a very low-key, fun-filled two days geared for all-levels of players, from beginners to advanced. Should be an amazingly fun experience for all!
Please come and join in the fun!
Warm Regards,
Linda Hagerman

About the Washington State Polocrosse Clinic…
Learn how to play Polocrosse from some of the best international junior, senior and adult players on the APA circuit. Attached is an entry form. Please enter as individual players. Riders will be grouped by skill-level. If your whole team is planning to take the clinic, please check that box on the entry form so that your team will be placed in a group together.
Clinic Groups: Up to 36 riders can enter the clinic. Riders will be divided into two groups of roughly 18 players: 1) a “first time” player and walk-trot group, and 2) an intermediate/advanced group where ball handling skills are fairly good and riders are mostly cantering during play. During the mounted session, six players will be on the field at a time during a Chukka. As this is a teaching clinic, chukkas (normally 8 minutes) will last between 10-20 minutes.

The WSPA Pony Club Challenge:
Tahoma Polocrosse is offering a Pony Club Challenge during 2008! For every practice, tournament or polocrosse activity a pony clubber attends in 2008, they will earn a point. High point winners at the end of the year in 3 divisions will win a new Polocrosse Racket. Entry forms are included in this rally packet or available at www.nwponyclub.org under “Horse Sports”.
About the USPC Rally….
Put your newly honed polocrosse skills to work at the Monday, May 26th, USPC Polocrosse Teaching Rally! Attached is the team entry form and below are the division descriptions. Pick the division that you think best describers you teams playing abilities. The clinic/rally organizers may change your division based on observations at the clinic, to give you the best possible experience at the rally.
Rally Divisions:
These divisions have been modified for this teaching rally to encourage more pony clubbers to play. For new divisions played at USPC Championships, see the 2008 Polocrosse newsletter at www.ponyclub.org/rulebooks.
First Timers: Never competed before in Polocrosse.
Beginning Novice: Walk/trot only. Players very new to polocrosse and are still developing basic ball handling skills.
Novice: Players that have recently begun playing polocrosse, play primarily at the trot, and are still developing basic ball handling skills.
Intermediate: Players that play primarily at the canter with at least 50% accuracy in ball handling skills and demonstrate a developing knowledge of team strategy.
Advanced: Players that play primarily at the canter with highly developed ball handling skills and knowledge of team strategy.
Divisions may be combined or divided by age/pony if entries warrant.
Team: A team consists of three players and a stable manager. The team captain MUST be a rider. Every effort will be made to accommodate individual riders who need a team in the appropriate division.
Rules: The 2008 Polocrosse Rulebook and the 2007 Horse Management Rulebook and rules for those competition shall govern this rally. This is considered a one-day rally, so no feed rooms will be required. Hint: there is a new 2008 newsletter for both HM & PX! Also, the Polocrosse Rulebook is new this year – look for new ages for divisions played at championships and new info on allowable bits. You can order the rulebooks from the USPC bookstore or download from the website at www.ponyclub.org under “publications”.
Loaner Equipment:
Extra polo wraps and bell boots will be available on the grounds for pony clubbers who need to borrow this required equipment for the day. Call Linda Hagerman to make advanced arrangements. For the extra polocrosse racket that is required to hang in the tack room during the rally, it is OK to make a cardboard cut-out racket, as rackets are expensive and extra rackets are scarce!
Check out the Polocrosse Discipline page on the USPC website at www.ponyclub.org/disciplines/polocrosse!

Logistics for the Clinic & Rally
Field: games shall be played outside on turf in a standard sized (60 yard by 160 yard) polocrosse field. Be prepared for rain! This is an outdoor field.
Stabling: There are no stalls at this facility (yet). Gateways for Youth is generously donating the use of the field. We have staked out a secure area for electrical tape paddocks. Please bring enough step-in posts and electrical tape to fence off a 20’ x 20’ paddock for your horse if you plan on spending Saturday or Sunday night. If you have a solar charger, please bring that as well. We will link four paddocks to one charger, which should provide ample voltage to keep horses secure. Please try to set up your paddock in a way that, should your horse break through the tape, they only take down their paddock. In other words, it’s best if you don’t share a common tape line with your neighborJ. Thanks to Briarwood Pony Club, Mr. Roger West will act as a Fencing Manager and, as an electrician, can help guide you in setting up your paddocks. Water will be available near the paddocks. Please secure all feed in your trailer.
Volunteers: Volunteer help will be requested at the Briefing. Please let parents know we’ll be asking for some minimal help the day of the rally.
Sunday Meals: Please plan to pack a lunch or eat off grounds for lunch on Sunday during the clinic. On Sunday night, we will have a Pot Luck dinner at 5:30 PM at the under-cover play area in the front of the Gateways for Youth building. Please bring a dish to share!
Monday Meals: We are working on getting a mobile food vendor to be on the grounds on Monday to serve coffee/breakfast & lunch/snacks. We’ll keep you posted via your team Chaperone if food will be available on grounds.
Other Food Options: Grocery stores and fast-food are located within one mile of the facility, otherwise please plan on packing food. Please bring a healthy snack for kids to share in the “barn” area. Water will be provided for both the clinic and rally for participants.
Tack Rooms: Trailers will be used for Tack Rooms and to tie the horses to. Trailers that are used to tie horses to must remain hooked to a vehicle and will be directed into a “barn” area that will be closed to non-rally participants during the rally. So, please make sure you have the items you need out of this rig before the rally starts!
Dry Camping: There will be areas for dry camping (tent, camper, RV) with access to sani-cans and a shared water source (no individual hook ups). No electrical hook ups will be available. No fee for camping.
Hotel: The Puyallup-South Hill Best Western is located 5 miles east on same road on 620 S. Hill Park Drive. Directions and rate information is available at 253-848-1500 or www.bestwesternparkplaza.com.
Out of State: If you are traveling from out of state and need a place to stay, please contact Linda Hagerman at (253) 848-5890.
Dogs: Please leave your pets at home.
