HORSE MANAGEMent merit badges

USPC announces the release of the Pony Club Achievement Badge Program. Ten badges demonstrating different horse management skills have been created. The intent of the program is to offer members at the D-level a sense of achievement in between ratings as they master different skill requirements.

Currently, badges are available for Grooming, Feeding, Horse Parts, Tack, Shoeing, Health Care, Boots and Bandages, Leading, Tack and Turnout, and Stable Management. Another ten badges for riding skills are expected to be released in the spring.

It is up to the individual clubs/centers to devise a system for the awarding of badges. The aim of this program is to steer away from a “formal” atmosphere of testing and allow the members to express as much of their knowledge as possible in a hands-on manner (i.e., using a bridle to talk about its parts instead of pointing at a picture). Badges should be award in an enjoyable arrangement for both members and the instructors, allowing the members to confidently demonstrate the knowledge they have gained.

An Instructor’s booklet was created to outline the objective and goals for each badge. It also gives the page numbers of The United Sates Pony Club Manual of Horsemanship, D Level, where discussion on particular goals can be found. Other helpful resources are listed as well.

A workbook for members is also available. It lists the objective for each goal and provides guidance on what knowledge will be needed to achieve each badge.

Badges ($2.50/ea.) are available from the USPC Bookstore. As the badges are to be awarded through clubs and centers, badge purchases should be made by the club/center, not individual members. Instructor Booklets ($4.00) and Member Workbooks ($8.50) are available from the USPC Bookstore, or are available to download from the Web site. You may place an order at www.ponyclub.org or by calling 859/422-5522.

Work study Program

The purpose of the Work Study Program is to provide opportunities for upper-level Pony Clubbers to stay involved, to encourage their participation in regional activities at a higher level, and to mentor them into future horse management judges, clinicians, instructors, and raters.

The obvious advantage to your club is to have different and experienced Pony Club members work with your club to provide valuable assistance and knowledge. This program is extremely valuable to clubs having mostly young and inexperienced members.

Who is eligible for the Work Study Program?

All C3, B, H.HA, and A Pony Club members are eligible to become Work Study candidates. This program is based solely on a candidate’s strengths and willingness to work with other clubs on a Regional level. Financial need or lack of need is not a consideration with this program.

These specifics will head off problems in using these documents:

1) Spaces for the user to fill in are designated in light blue. Ignore the length of those spaces, you can type in any number of characters you like.

Of course, typing too many characters will cause lines to wrap and screw up the appearance of the form. But it isn't likely that any answers will be that long.

2) Things that look like check boxes are. Just click on a box to place or remove an 'X' from that box.

3) When filling out a form, be sure to do a "Save as..." and not a "Save", to avoid overwriting the template form.

correct use of the USPC Medical Release Form and Activity Release.

Because the Medical Release Form is intended to verify current medical considerations and information, the 2010 form will not be available until
sometime much closer to 2010. If a member is joining as a prorated member, they will actually need to complete two different medical release forms -
2009 and 2010. Please understand that the Medical Release Form is to protect not only our members, but also volunteers and any first responders in the
event of an accident or other emergency situation.

Another reminder regarding the Medical Release Form that your club's parents all need to know
is that at any time a treatable accident occurs (whether during a USPC function or not) the attending physician should complete the back of the
form and sign to indicate approval to continue participating in riding activities.

Similarly, the Activity Release Form is intended to offer protection for our members, etc. during specific activities. Thus, the 2010 Activity Release is also not yet available.

Both of these forms will be available in advance, but not at this time.

Sincerely,

Karol Wilson

USPC Director of Member Services and Regional Administration
