ABC Retreat Jan 15-17

Hi everyone,
I am writing with more background details about the ABC Retreat. I defer to Nancy as Organizer, but hopefully this information will help clear up some questions; I hope I am not being redundant. There are still many details to work out and this initial request for gathering numbers of interested members is only a preliminary step in organizing the Retreat.

This Retreat is designed, both in format (all day, intensive workshops for the most part) and in material (HB and up beyond/outside the A) for the upper level members in our region AND for those very motivated and mature middle range pony clubbers. Because space is limited, probably to 25 members, upper rated kids will be given priority in attending. Partly because their time in pony club may be limited; the middle range pony clubbers will become the upper level members of the future.

This is not a prep. The curriculum will be the kind of information that helps create/fuel well rounded, informed horsemen, and should be informative to those who are truly addicted and passionate to this life with horses.
It is also designed to address the needs of those members for which the regular club curriculum falls short because it is difficult as DC's to plan curriculum for the one or two upper level members they might have in their club.

With that being said, I feel that this is exactly the type of weekend younger C's such as Natalie Dukes or Liz Stump would enjoy. My guess is that when it comes down to it, there will be room to include most of those who have a deep interest, but it is important to share that it is what it is and not necessarily for everyone based solely on rating.

I also agree with Tami Stump that it would be SO worth the time and money
to attend the Annual Meeting, this year in Houston, as an alternative to
feeding the need. :)

The ABC Retreat is in the planning state. Friday Jan 15 evening-Sunday Jan 17... To keep you informed about the progress: It will be held in the Turner/Aumsville area with an emphasis on GROUP activity for upper level Pony Clubbers. There will be an option for accomodations (sleeping bags in Yaegers club house/ beds at McKnights/ motel (Rodeway Inn) in Sublimity (all within a 10 mile radius...The main reason is to keep expenses as low as possible. Oh yes - the eating thing...Catered breakfast and lunch- dinner at local restaurant with a big banquet area. Now the important part...We will center on Horse Anatomy and care - conditioning for various horse sports - planning a workable facility - understanding requirements for various horse activities....at the UPPER LEVEL...It would be great to get an idea of numbers -

Please send me WHO from your club wants to come...C3 and up plus an older MATURE member who has certain needs. It is not planned as a fun and games outing, but serious horse people will "eat up" the material. Lots of group work activity mixing up kids from different clubs so they have an opportunity to network better. SOOO send me the WHO from your club and in this stage we may be able to tailor the info. to certain needs.

Hi Everyone,

I am putting out an "all call" for horse parts! We need horse parts for dissection at the ABC Retreat. If you all would ask your veterinarians if they know of a source or if you have a nearby rendering plant (even if you don't plan to attend). The parts can be kept in the freezer wrapped in plastic until we need them. We can figure out a way to arrange transportation. Any parts will be considered!

This is a fascinating and exciting instructional lesson that will get the kids "eewwing, ahhhing and involved". I think it will generate even more interest in the Retreat this year.

I also saw a leg and hoof at the Barn Fair this weekend and if anyone from Clackamas River will be attending ABC, we'd love to use those pieces for instruction and viewing as well!

Thanks, let me know if you can help!

Hello Region,
As you may know, the ABC Retreat is in the planning stage for January 15-17. It was a wonderful success last year, offering a weekend of classroom instruction at the HB level for our region's A, B and C members. It also provided a unique opportunity for them to mingle and socialize.

The Retreat is in need of an Organizer. Much of the framework has been laid out; what it needs is a captain at the helm. There is alot of support for this organizer, from both last year's Organizer and from the committee which is in place and actively putting things together.

If you think the Retreat is a great idea (it is!) and you think you might be able to help out (you can!), please consider signing up as Organizer. There is a lot of help available on this one. By helping out, you can help prevent others from becoming over burdoned and burned out. Thank you! -Julie

The following is copied from an email regarding the Retreat. Annie has other details which will be of help:

Hey everyone, here's the list of who signed up to help out with what at the ABC Retreat. It's time to get to work if this is going to happen in January. The site is booked at the Oregon 4h Center - hope to see you this coming weekend.
